Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened on April 22, 1998—Earth Day as the fourth theme park at Walt Disney World Resort.

Discovery Island

Character Meet & Greets
Discovery Island is one of the best places in Disney’s Animal Kingdom to meet some of your favorite Disney characters. Rather than grand castles or royal settings, the character experiences here embrace the spirit of adventure and exploration that defines the park. Whether you’re meeting Mickey and Minnie in their safari gear, saying hello to the lovable Kevin from Up, or keeping an eye out for the enchanting and elusive DiVine, these unique encounters offer memorable photo opportunities and a little extra Disney magic between adventures.
Adventurers Outpost
Meet Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse dressed in their safari best at Adventurers Outpost, one of the few places at Walt Disney World where you can meet both characters together. It’s a popular stop for families and a great way to kick off your day in the park.
Kevin from Up
The colorful, larger-than-life bird from Pixar’s Up often roams Discovery Island, delighting guests with playful interactions and plenty of laughs. She’s one of the most unique character encounters at Walt Disney World.
DiVine
Keep your eyes open—you never know where DiVine might appear. This living work of art blends seamlessly into the lush surroundings, using graceful movements and elaborate costumes to become part of the landscape. Many guests walk right past her before realizing she’s there!

One of my favorite things about Discovery Island is that it encourages guests to slow down. While many visitors rush from attraction to attraction, this area rewards those who take time to explore the details.
Pandora — The World of Avatar
Step beyond Discovery Island and into another world—quite literally. Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, Pandora – The World of Avatar transports guests to the breathtaking moon of Pandora. Where you’ll find towering floating mountains, cascading waterfalls, and glowing bioluminescent landscapes. The space is one of the most immersive environments ever built by Disney Imagineering.
Whether you’re soaring on the back of a banshee, drifting through a glowing rainforest, or simply taking in the incredible details, Pandora is a land that rewards exploration. Be sure to visit both during the day and after sunset, when the landscape transforms with vibrant bioluminescent colors and offers an entirely different experience.

What’s Changing
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is in the midst of its largest transformation since the park opened in 1998. Earlier this year, DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed to make way for an all-new land inspired by the Tropical Americas. Construction is now underway, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the park.
The reimagined land will celebrate the vibrant cultures, landscapes, and wildlife of Central and South America while introducing experiences inspired by two beloved Disney franchises.
Encanto
Guests will step into the magical world of Encanto, where a brand-new family attraction will take visitors inside the Madrigal family’s enchanted Casita. The area will also feature a beautifully themed carousel inspired by the animals of the Tropical Americas, creating a whimsical experience for guests of all ages.
Indiana Jones
The current DINOSAUR attraction is expected to be transformed into an all-new Indiana Jones adventure. Rather than traveling back to prehistoric times, guests will venture into an ancient Maya temple in search of a legendary creature. While Disney has shared that the attraction will feature an original story unique to Walt Disney World, it will draw inspiration from the fan-favorite Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland.
Although Disney has not announced an official opening date, construction is well underway, and many fans anticipate the new Tropical Americas land could debut sometime in 2028. I’ll continue sharing updates here as Disney reveals more details.
