Disney Caring for Giants Tour: My Animal Kingdom Experience

updated October 2026

One of the things I love about Disney’s Animal Kingdom is that there’s more to this park than rides and attractions. It’s a place where storytelling meets the natural world, and some of its most memorable experiences happen when you slow down and learn a little more about the animals that call it home.

During a visit to Walt Disney World, I had the opportunity to experience Caring for Giants, a guided experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that offers a closer look at the park’s African elephant herd and the team dedicated to their care.

As someone who has visited Disney World many times, I always enjoy discovering experiences that take me beyond the usual park day. Caring for Giants was a chance to learn something new, ask questions, and gain a greater appreciation for these incredible animals.

If you love animals, enjoy learning about conservation, or are looking for something different to add to your Animal Kingdom itinerary, here’s a look at my experience.

Why I Chose the Caring for Giants Tour

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has always offered a different feel from the other Walt Disney World theme parks. Along with its attractions and immersive lands, the park puts wildlife, nature, and conservation at the heart of the experience.

Caring for Giants gives guests an opportunity to learn about one of the park’s most recognizable animal residents: the African elephant.

I was especially interested in learning more about the elephants themselves and the people who care for them. Seeing an animal is one thing, but understanding its behavior, daily needs, and the challenges facing its species in the wild adds another dimension to the experience.

That’s what makes a guided animal experience so appealing to me. You aren’t just looking at something interesting; you’re learning to appreciate it in a new way.

If you’re planning a visit, you can read more about what makes Disney’s Animal Kingdom one of my favorite Walt Disney World parks.

What Is Disney’s Caring for Giants Experience?

Caring for Giants is a guided educational experience focused on the African elephants at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

During my visit, our guide shared information about the herd, elephant behavior, and the care these animals receive. We also had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Disney’s conservation efforts.

It’s worth knowing that this isn’t a hands-on animal encounter. The experience is designed around observing the elephants and learning about them while respecting their space and well-being.

For me, that educational focus was part of the appeal. I wanted to learn more about these magnificent animals, not simply get a closer photograph.

Getting an Up-Close Look at the African Elephants

Of course, the highlight was seeing the elephants!

The experience included a designated viewing area where we could observe the herd while our guide explained more about their behavior and care. Being able to watch these animals while learning about them made the experience much more meaningful than simply spotting them during a walk through the park.

There’s something special about taking a moment to appreciate an animal of this size and presence. Elephants are impressive to see, but learning about their individual needs and the challenges facing wild populations adds another layer to that appreciation.

The experience also gave us a better understanding of the work that goes into caring for animals in a zoological setting. It’s a reminder that the animal experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom involve dedicated teams and ongoing attention to animal welfare.

The Little Details That Make the Experience Memorable

Even the little details caught my attention. Our tour identification badges were a memorable conversation piece because of their connection to recycling and the elephant experience.

It’s details like these that remind me how much thought can go into a Disney experience, even beyond the main attraction. I appreciate when an experience encourages guests to think about the environment and the resources we use.

Learning From the Animal Care Team

One of my favorite parts of Caring for Giants was the opportunity to hear directly from the people who work with the animals.

After observing the elephants, we had time to ask questions and hear more about the herd and the team’s work.

I always appreciate experiences that allow time for questions. You can read facts online, but hearing explanations from knowledgeable people who work in the field can bring those facts to life.

The smaller-group format also made the experience feel more personal. Rather than simply moving through a series of exhibits, we had an opportunity to listen, learn, and engage with the subject.

For anyone who enjoys understanding the details behind an experience, this is one of the strongest reasons to consider the tour.

Caring for Giants and the Importance of Elephant Conservation

The experience also highlights an important topic: the conservation of African elephants.

African elephants face serious challenges in the wild, including habitat loss, poaching, and conflict between people and wildlife. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies African savanna elephants as Endangered and African forest elephants as Critically Endangered. Learn more about the IUCN’s African elephant assessments.

Disney supports wildlife conservation initiatives through the Disney Conservation Fund and other efforts. During Caring for Giants, we learned more about Disney’s work and the importance of protecting elephant populations in the wild.

What I appreciated most was the opportunity to connect the animals we were observing with the bigger picture. Conservation isn’t just about admiring wildlife; it’s also about understanding the challenges animals face and why protecting their habitats matters.

Experiences like this can encourage visitors to ask questions, learn more, and take an interest in conservation long after their park visit ends.

Is the Caring for Giants Tour Worth It?

For me, Caring for Giants was a worthwhile addition to an Animal Kingdom visit because it offered something different from a typical day in the park.

I’d especially recommend considering it if you:

  • Love animals. If elephants are a favorite, the opportunity to observe them while learning about their care is a memorable experience.
  • Enjoy educational experiences. The guide’s insights add context you might not get from simply seeing the animals during your park day.
  • Are interested in conservation. The experience provides an introduction to elephant care and broader wildlife conservation efforts.
  • Have visited Animal Kingdom before. If you’ve already enjoyed the major attractions, a guided experience can give you another reason to explore the park.

It may not be the right fit for everyone. If your family is focused on rides, shows, and fitting as much as possible into one day, you’ll want to consider how an additional guided experience fits into your plans.

But if you enjoy slowing down, asking questions, and learning something new, Caring for Giants is worth a look.

What to Know Before Booking Caring for Giants

If you’re considering this experience for a future Walt Disney World vacation, here are a few practical details to keep in mind.

  • Duration: My experience was in 2023. Disney currently lists the tour as approximately 60 minutes.
  • Price: Check the current price before booking. Disney’s official listing currently shows $39 per person, plus tax; prices and availability can change.
  • Park admission: A valid Animal Kingdom park ticket is required separately.
  • Age requirements: Disney currently lists a minimum age of 4. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult.
  • Viewing distance: The current experience description places guests approximately 80–100 feet from the elephants. This is an observation experience, not a hands-on encounter.
  • Weather and walking: The experience takes place outdoors, so comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are a good idea.
  • Photography: Disney restricts cameras, video equipment, and cell phones in backstage areas. Review the current rules before your visit.
  • Reservations: Check availability and reserve through Disney’s official website. Tour details, schedules, and policies can change.

My Final Thoughts on Caring for Giants

Caring for Giants was a reminder that some of the most memorable Disney experiences don’t involve a ride or a nighttime spectacular.

For me, it was about taking time to learn more about the African elephants, hearing from the people who care for them, and gaining a better appreciation for the importance of wildlife conservation.

I love that Disney’s Animal Kingdom offers experiences that encourage guests to look beyond the attractions and connect with the natural world. If you’re an animal lover or simply curious about what goes on behind the scenes, this is an experience worth considering.

And if you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation and want help deciding which tours, dining experiences, or extras are worth including in your budget, I’d be happy to help you weigh your options.
