Many visitors think the magic only happens inside the theme parks. However, that’s far from the truth! Whether you’re planning an arrival day, a resort day, or simply looking for something different, Walt Disney World offers incredible experiences that don’t require a park ticket.
From decorating cakes and creating your own sangria to horseback riding, woodworking, and relaxing resort activities, here are some of my favorite ways to make vacation memories outside the parks.
While Walt Disney World is famous for its four incredible theme parks, there’s so much more to experience beyond the park gates. From beautiful Disney Resort hotels and unique dining to recreation, entertainment, and seasonal events, you can fill an entire vacation with memorable experiences that don’t require a theme park ticket. Sangria University (Three Bridges Bar & Grill, Disney’s Coranado Resort)
Looking for a unique adults-only experience? On select Saturdays and Sundays, Three Bridges Bar & Grill at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort hosts Sangria University, a fun 90-minute class where you’ll learn the history of sangria while creating and sampling several varieties.
Set in the beautiful open-air restaurant overlooking Lago Dorado, this experience includes instruction from Disney Cast Members and the opportunity to craft your own signature sangria.
Reservations can typically be made up to 60 days in advance through the My Disney Experience app. Guests must be 21 years or older.
Cake Decorating Experience (Amorette’s Patisserie, Disney Springs)
If I had to choose just one of these experiences, this would be it-the Cake Decorating Class at Amorette’s Patisserie.
During this small-group class, Disney pastry chefs guide guests through decorating their own Mickey Dome Cake before the bakery opens for the day. Along the way you’ll enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, juice, mimosas, and bellinis.

Not only do you leave with a beautiful cake—you also learn decorating techniques you can use again at home. I’ve done this experience myself, and I can honestly say the cake tastes every bit as amazing as it looks!
Create a One-of-a-Kind Souvenir at a Disney Resort Classes
Looking for a relaxing break from the parks? Select Disney Resort hotels periodically offer instructor-led painting classes where guests can create their own Disney-inspired artwork. These small-group experiences are beginner-friendly, making them perfect whether you’ve painted before or are simply looking to try something new.
Depending on the location, you’ll receive all the supplies needed and leave with a personalized keepsake to remember your vacation. Participating resorts and schedules change throughout the year, so check the My Disney Experience app during your visit for current offerings.
Discover Your Creative Side with Woodworking at Fort Wilderness
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort offers one of the most unique experiences anywhere on property. At Crockett’s Tavern, guests can participate in woodworking workshops that allow you to build and customize a rustic souvenir.
It’s a fun activity for families, couples, or anyone looking to experience a quieter side of Walt Disney World. Pair it with lunch, a walk through the resort, or an evening campfire for an unforgettable non-park day.
Experience Disney on Horseback
Many guests are surprised to learn that horseback riding is available right at Walt Disney World.
Located at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, guided trail rides take guests through peaceful wooded areas that feel worlds away from the busy theme parks. It’s a completely different perspective of Disney and a wonderful option for anyone looking to slow down and enjoy nature.
Trail rides are available for guests ages 9 and older, and reservations are recommended.
Explore the Resorts by Bike
Several Disney Resort hotels offer bicycle rentals, making it easy to explore scenic walking paths and waterfront areas at your own pace.
Some of my favorite places to ride include Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside, and Disney’s Old Key West Resort. It’s a relaxing way to spend a morning or afternoon while taking in beautiful resort details that many guests never notice.
Reel in Some Disney Magic with a Fishing Excursion
Did you know you can go fishing at Walt Disney World?
Disney offers guided catch-and-release fishing excursions on several resort lakes, complete with equipment and experienced guides. Whether you’re an experienced angler or trying fishing for the first time, this peaceful activity offers a completely different way to experience Disney.
Private excursions are available for families or small groups and can be reserved in advance.
Level Up at Level 99
Level 99 recently opened on the West Side of Disney Springs! This 2-story gamers complex is fun for the whole family with over 63 gaming rooms and challenges.
There is also a full service bar and dining available if you need a breather between challenges. Tickets are required and start at around $35/person for up to 2.5 hours of gaming fun. This is experience is best with at least 2 people but no more than 6 guests in a room at a time.
Turn Transportation into an Attraction
One of my favorite “free” Disney activities is simply exploring the transportation system.
Ride the Disney Skyliner between resorts, hop aboard the Monorail to visit deluxe hotels, or cruise across Seven Seas Lagoon on a water launch. You’ll discover beautiful resorts, unique dining options, hidden photo opportunities, and spectacular views—all without using a theme park ticket.
Sometimes the journey really is part of the vacation.
Visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
Even if you’re not staying there, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is worth visiting.
Step outside to one of the resort’s savannas where you can often spot giraffes, zebras, ankole cattle, flamingos, and dozens of other African animals roaming just beyond the viewing areas.
Knowledgeable cultural representatives are frequently available to answer questions and provide fascinating information about the animals and their habitats.
This is one of my favorite recommendations for an arrival day or relaxing resort afternoon.
Resort Hop Around Walt Disney World
One of the best ways to experience Disney without entering a park is by resort hopping.
Each Disney Resort has its own unique atmosphere, dining options, architecture, and recreational activities. Spend the day exploring the Monorail resorts, take the Skyliner between Caribbean Beach, Riviera, and Pop Century, or wander the BoardWalk area in the evening.
You’ll quickly discover that every resort tells its own story—and some become vacation favorites even without spending the night.
Enjoy Free Evening Entertainment
Many Disney Resorts offer complimentary evening activities for guests and visitors alike.
Depending on the resort and season, you may find:
- Campfires with marshmallow roasting
- Outdoor Disney movies under the stars
- Live musicians and entertainment
- Electrical Water Pageant viewing
- BoardWalk performers
- Beautiful nighttime atmosphere around the resorts
These experiences are a wonderful way to unwind after a busy vacation day and often become some of the most memorable moments of a trip.
The best part? Many of these experiences require little or no additional planning beyond making a reservation. Whether you’re filling an arrival day, taking a break from the parks, or planning an entire resort day, these hidden activities offer a different way to experience the magic of Walt Disney World.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Resort hopping is a very popular activity on property. However, recently Disney changed their policy- you must have a resort reservation or dining reservation to board a Disney Springs resort bus or boat. This is specific to the Disney Springs location. You also can not park at a resort without a resort or dining reservation.
Yes. Most “Magical Extras” or resort activities require advanced reservations which usually open 60 days prior to the activity. Reservation can be made in the “My Disney Experience” app through your account. Some reservations must be made over the phone.
