Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground: Our 3-Night Stay in the Cabins

A Different Kind of Disney Stay

If you’re looking for a Disney resort experience that feels peaceful, spacious, and completely different from the typical theme park hotel then Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground delivers exactly that.

We recently spent 3 nights in the newly updated Disney Vacation Club cabins, and this resort truly feels like its own destination within Walt Disney World. With 750 acres of pine and cypress forest, Fort Wilderness offers everything from tent camping to RV sites to fully equipped cabins—along with an incredible variety of recreation and activities.

Getting Oriented: This Resort Is BIG

One of the first things to know—this resort is massive.

At the front of the resort is the Outpost where you’ll find a lobby building with bell services, golf cart rental, transportation and more. photo: @bizzy.runninganddizn

📍 The Outpost (Your Starting Point)

When you arrive, you’ll enter the Outpost area, which includes:

  • Lobby / Check-in building
  • Bell Services (located to the left of the lobby entrance)
  • Golf cart rental (behind the lobby)
  • Outpost Bus Depot (main transportation hub)

From here, you’ll catch buses to:

  • Animal Kingdom
  • EPCOT
  • Hollywood Studios
  • Disney Springs (with transfers to water parks)

Getting Around: Golf Carts & Bus Loops

We cannot stress this enough—we highly recommend renting a golf cart.

Golf Carts
Golf cart rental is highly encouraged! This resort is very sprawling. photo: @bizzy.runninganddizn
  • Available in 4- or 6-seaters
  • Book as early as possible
  • Plenty of parking throughout the resort
  • Pro tip: decorate your cart so you can easily find it!
Disney Bus
There are 2 major bus depots (the Outpost and the Settlement) where guests can catch a ride to the theme parks. The internal bus loop takes guests around the resort. photo: @bizzy.runninganddizn

If you don’t rent a cart, you’ll rely on the internal bus system, which includes:

  • 🟠 Orange Line
  • 🟡 Yellow Line

These loops connect:

  • Campsites & cabins
  • Pools
  • Dining
  • Recreation areas

👉 Important Tip: Know which loop your site or cabin is on—it makes a huge difference when navigating.

Tri-Circle-D Ranch: A Must-Do Experience

Located near the Outpost, Tri-Circle-D Ranch is home to the horses of Walt Disney World—and one of the most unique experiences on property.

We booked the guided trail ride, and it was a highlight of our stay.

  • ⏱️ 45-minute guided ride
  • 💲 $65 per person
  • 👧 Ages 9+
  • 📅 Book up to 60 days in advance

There were plenty of Cast Members guiding the experience, making it beginner-friendly and incredibly enjoyable.

There are 2 separate stable areas for the Tri Circle D Ranch at Fort Wilderness Resort. At the outpost you’ll find horseback riding. At the Settlement, the newest stables are home to the working Disney horses who pull the carriages and Main Street Vehicles. The Settlement side is also where the younger kids can enjoy a pony ride.

The Meadow Recreation Area

The Meadow Pool area is the central hub for activities and recreation.

Home to the largest pool and many activities like archery, gold panning, and Chip & Dale’s Campfire Sing Along, the Meadow Recreational area has it all! photo: @bizzy.runninganddizn

Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Meadow Pool (largest pool on property)
  • Trading Post (gift shop + essentials)
  • Archery experiences
  • Gold panning
  • Playground & games
  • Chip & Dale Campfire Sing-Along + Movie Under the Stars

There are also quiet pools located throughout the resort for a more relaxed experience.

Comfort Stations & Campsite Amenities

For guests staying in tent or pop-up sites, Comfort Stations provide:

  • Restrooms
  • Showers
  • Laundry facilities

Even as cabin guests, we found the laundry facilities convenient and easy to use.

The Settlement Area (Dining + Waterfront)

As you move toward Bay Lake, you’ll reach the Settlement area, where campsite numbers decrease as you get closer.

This area includes:

  • Trail’s End Restaurant
  • Crockett’s Tavern
  • Pioneer Hall (home of Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue)
  • Magic Kingdom boat dock

👉 Tip: If you feel turned around, remember—lower campsite numbers = closer to the Settlement and waterfront.

Lakeshore Lodge Construction Update

Disney is currently building Disney Lakeshore Lodge just beyond Fort Wilderness.

  • Located along Bay Lake
  • Some impact to the right side of the boat dock
  • Beach access remains available to the left

This will be something to watch as it develops, with an expected opening in Summer 2027.

Nighttime at Fort Wilderness

One of our favorite parts of the stay was the evening atmosphere.

Chip & Dale Campfire Sing-Along

We grabbed a s’mores kit from the Wagon Wheel food truck, roasted marshmallows, and enjoyed the relaxed, family-friendly vibe.

Water Pageant + Fireworks

Afterward, we headed to the dock to watch:

  • The Electrical Water Pageant
  • Magic Kingdom fireworks over the water

The resort even pipes in the music from Happily Ever After, making it a truly special experience.

Final Thoughts

Fort Wilderness is unlike any other Disney resort.

It offers space, flexibility, and a slower pace—while still delivering that signature Disney magic.

Yes, it takes a little time to learn your way around—but once you do, it becomes part of the adventure.

We had an incredible stay and are already looking forward to coming back.
