There are plenty of things to see and do at Disney, but there’s something uniquely special about coming face-to-face with a character you’ve loved for years.
Whether it’s Mickey Mouse, a favorite princess, or a newer character like Moana or Mirabel, meeting Disney characters can be one of those moments that makes a Disney vacation feel personal.
And the best part? You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it.
I’ve watched children light up when they see a favorite character for the first time—and I’ve seen plenty of adults have that same reaction. There’s something about stepping into the parks and suddenly seeing a character you grew up watching standing right there in front of you.
That’s a little bit of Disney magic I never want to take for granted.

More Than Just a Photo
A character encounter might result in a great photo, but the photo is really just part of the experience.
At Disney, characters aren’t simply standing in a designated spot waiting for guests to walk by. Depending on the experience, they may dance, joke around, interact with your family, sign autographs, or simply play along with whatever your group brings to the moment.
At Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, you may even encounter characters strolling through the parks and interacting with guests in unexpected places.
Those spontaneous moments can be some of the most fun.
You never quite know what a character might do—or how they might react to the people around them.
And it’s not just the kids who get caught up in it. Watching an adult suddenly become a kid again when Peter Pan walks by or when Mickey comes around the corner is one of my favorite things about Disney.
Maybe that’s why Disney’s “Never Grow Up” philosophy feels so appropriate.

How Disney Character Meet-and-Greets Work
There are several different ways to meet Disney characters during your vacation.
Some characters have scheduled meet-and-greet locations where you can check the My Disney Experience app or Disneyland app for information about when and where they appear.
Others may make appearances throughout the parks, creating those spontaneous encounters that you weren’t necessarily expecting.
And then there are character dining experiences, where you can enjoy a meal while favorite characters come directly to your table.
Each type of encounter has its own personality, so don’t assume that one character experience will feel exactly like another.
If meeting characters is important to your family, I recommend looking at your options before your trip and deciding which experiences are worth making time for.
Creating Memories You’ll Keep
There’s something incredibly special about seeing a child’s face when they finally meet the character they’ve been talking about for months.
Sometimes the reaction is exactly what you expected. And sometimes it’s completely unexpected.
But here’s the thing I love about these moments: the memory isn’t only for the person meeting the character.
Parents, grandparents, siblings, and even other guests nearby can become part of the moment. You might find yourself smiling at another family’s excitement or watching a character completely embrace a child’s imagination.
There’s a lot of negativity in the world. I’ll happily take a few minutes of watching people smile, laugh, and believe in a little magic.
The Magic Is in the Interaction
Disney is known for immersive storytelling, and the characters are a huge part of that storytelling.
The Cast Members who bring these characters to life are incredibly talented at creating an experience that feels personal—even when they’re interacting with dozens of guests throughout the day.
It’s the wave, the dance, the high-five, the playful reaction, or the little moment that makes someone feel like the character is genuinely happy to see them.
I’ve always thought there was something to be learned from watching these interactions.
The kindness and patience shown—and the way they meet guests where they are—can be a pretty wonderful reminder of how much a small gesture can mean to someone else.
You Don’t Have to Be a Kid
Let’s be honest: Disney characters aren’t just for kids.
In fact, I would argue that some of the most entertaining character interactions I’ve seen involve adults.
There’s a particular kind of joy that happens when someone who hasn’t thought about a favorite Disney character since childhood suddenly finds themselves standing face-to-face with that character again.
For a moment, you’re not thinking about your itinerary, your dining reservation, or how many steps you’ve already walked.
You’re just enjoying the moment.
And isn’t that one of the reasons we go to Disney in the first place?

Connecting Generations
Disney characters have a pretty amazing ability to bridge generations.
Grandparents can introduce their grandchildren to characters they loved decades earlier. Parents can watch their children experience the same stories that were part of their own childhoods. And sometimes three generations can stand together for a photo with Mickey Mouse.
That’s one of the things that makes Disney different. The characters may change over time, but the feeling of meeting a character you love doesn’t really go away.

A Few Tips for Character Encounters
If meeting characters is high on your Disney vacation wish list, a little planning can make the experience even better.
Check the app. Character locations and appearance times can change, so check the My Disney Experience app at Walt Disney World or the Disneyland app during your visit.
Don’t overlook spontaneous encounters. Some of the best character moments aren’t necessarily the ones you planned.
Give yourself time. If meeting a particular character is important to your family, don’t try to squeeze it into a five-minute gap between attractions.
Bring your camera—but don’t forget to put it down. Of course you’ll want the photo. But make sure you actually experience the interaction, too.
Consider character dining. If you want more character interaction without spending time waiting in traditional meet-and-greet lines, character dining can be a great option.

Final Thoughts
Meeting Disney characters is one of those experiences that can be easy to overlook when you’re planning a busy park day.
There are attractions to ride, shows to see, meals to enjoy, and a schedule that somehow always seems to fill up faster than you expect.
But I encourage you to make room for the characters. Because sometimes the moment you remember most isn’t the attraction you waited an hour to experience. It’s the look on your child’s face when Mickey walks toward the table.
Or the hug from a favorite princess.
It’s the laugh when Goofy does something completely unexpected.
Or maybe it’s your own reaction when you realize that a character you loved as a child is standing right in front of you. Those are the moments that make a Disney vacation feel like more than a vacation.
They’re the moments that bring a little bit of childhood back—and remind us that it’s perfectly okay to believe in magic every once in a while.
So, when you’re planning your next trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland, don’t just plan what you’re going to ride. Plan a little time to meet the characters, too. You might be surprised by just how much that moment means.
