Planning a Disney World vacation is no small feat! As a travel planner with countless trips under my belt, I often hear the question: How far in advance should I start planning my Disney World vacation?
The answer depends on a few factors! One thing is certain—early planning sets the stage for a smoother, more enjoyable trip!
Why Booking Early is Important
Disney vacations are incredibly popular, and many components of your trip need advanced reservations:
- Accommodations: Whether you’re eyeing the charm of Port Orleans Riverside (my personal “home away from home”) or dreaming of staying at a deluxe resort like the Grand Floridian, booking early gives you the best chance! The best shot at securing your preferred hotel and room type. Disney opens resort reservations as far as 500 days in advance.
- Dining & Experiences: Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) open 60 days before your trip. If you have your eye on those popular dining experiences like breakfast at Topolino’s Terrace, then planning ahead gives you an advantage.
How Early Should You Start?
Vacation packages vary in price depending on your choices. Your options are wide! Hotel choices range from budget friendly value hotels to Disney deluxe level resorts. Your cost depends on your room choice, travel party size, ticket choices, dates, and more.
First, it’s important to decide how much you want to spend. Then plan how much time you want/need to pay toward your vacation if necessary. Keep in mind, to book a stay at a Disney World hotel, a $200 deposit (per room) is required. Once booked, you can pay toward your trip as you are comfortable.
Importantly, the balance is due 30 days before arrival. Thus, know how far in advance you should start planning your Disney World vacation to manage expenses wisely.
- 12-18 Months in Advance: If you’re traveling during peak seasons, planning a large group trip, or hoping to snag a stay at a specific resort (like the popular Pop Century), the earlier, the better! This timeline gives you plenty of time to save, research, and secure your first choice for accommodations.
- 6-9 Months in Advance: This is ideal for most families. It lets you book your vacation package and start planning your park days and dining experiences without feeling rushed.
- Last-Minute Trips: If you’re booking within three months of your visit, flexibility is key. You’ll need to adjust your expectations! Resort availability and dining reservations will be limited. Nonetheless, Disney magic is always possible with a little strategy!
Pro Tips for Advanced Planning
- Work With a Travel Planner: Whether this is your first trip or your tenth, working with an experienced travel planner (like me!) can take the stress out of planning. From securing hard-to-get dining reservations to creating a custom itinerary, I’m here to help every step of the way.
- Be Strategic with Timing: Visiting during less crowded times (like late January or early September) will make planning easier and your trip more relaxing. Planning how far in advance you should start can help you find these optimal times.
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye out for special offers and promotions. Disney often releases discounts that can be applied to existing reservations. For example, I’m thrilled to be using a 25% room discount for my stay for the 2025 runDisney Marathon Weekend events.
