Universal Orlando Resort Transportation: A Guide to Getting Around

One of the things I love about staying at Universal Orlando Resort is how easy it is to get around. With three theme parks, Volcano Bay, 11 onsite hotels, and CityWalk, there’s a lot to explore! But you don’t need a car to do it. Universal offers a variety of complimentary transportation options, including buses, water taxis and walking paths, so getting where you want to go is often part of the fun rather than a hassle.

From the relaxing ride across the water to the convenience of a quick bus trip, each option has its own advantages. Let’s take a look at how Universal Orlando transportation works, when to use each option, and a few tips to make getting around the resort even easier.

Walking Paths: Sometimes the Best Way to Get Around

If you’re staying at a resort with a walking path, I’d encourage you to try it at least once. You may find that the walk itself becomes part of the Universal experience.

Don’t underestimate the simple pleasure of walking at Universal Orlando. Several onsite resorts have dedicated walking paths connecting them with the theme parks, CityWalk, and, in some cases, Volcano Bay. And when the weather cooperates, walking can be one of my favorite ways to get around.

The paths wind through beautifully landscaped areas and give you a chance to slow down and take in your surroundings instead of rushing from one mode of transportation to the next. There’s something especially nice about leaving the energy of the parks behind and enjoying a peaceful walk back to your resort.

Of course, not every resort is equally convenient for walking, so your hotel choice makes a difference. The resorts closest to the parks and CityWalk offer the most practical walking options, while others are better suited to Universal’s complimentary buses or water taxis.

Universal’s Water Taxis: Transportation That’s Part of the Fun

If you’re lucky enough to stay at a Universal resort with water taxi service, take advantage of it! In my opinion, this is one of the most enjoyable ways to get around Universal Orlando. Instead of boarding a bus, you can hop aboard a boat and cruise along the waterways connecting select Universal hotels with CityWalk and the theme parks.

The ride is relaxing, the views are beautiful, and after a long day in the parks, there’s something really nice about sitting back and letting someone else do the driving. It’s transportation, but it doesn’t feel like transportation.

Water taxis are especially convenient when you’re heading to Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, or CityWalk for dinner or an evening of entertainment. The boats drop you at the CityWalk transportation hub, just outside Universal Studios Florida, making it easy to continue on to wherever you’re headed.

And here’s one of the things I love about Universal’s water taxis: there’s no extra charge for resort guests. It’s one of those little perks that can make staying onsite feel like part of the vacation rather than simply a place to sleep.

Water taxi service is available from:

💡 Good to Know: Water taxi service is available from select Universal Orlando hotels and operates between the resorts and the CityWalk transportation hub. Service can be temporarily suspended due to weather or other operational conditions, so always have the resort’s bus transportation as a backup.

Universal Shuttle Buses: The Workhorse of the Resort

Not every Universal resort has a water taxi or a convenient walking path! BUT every onsite hotel has access to Universal’s complimentary shuttle buses. And while a bus ride may not be quite as exciting as cruising across the lagoon, it’s an incredibly convenient way to get around the resort.

Universal’s shuttle buses connect the onsite hotels with the theme parks, CityWalk and Volcano Bay, making it easy to leave your car parked and let Universal handle the driving. The buses are air-conditioned and run regularly. So, they’re especially useful when you’re ready to call it a day and don’t want to think about parking, traffic or navigating Orlando.

For some resorts, the buses are more than just another option, they’re the primary way to get around. The Endless Summer Resort hotels, for example, rely on bus transportation to connect guests with the rest of Universal Orlando Resort.

That’s one of the things I appreciate about staying onsite: you don’t have to rent a car or figure out Orlando transportation every time you want to go somewhere. Whether you’re heading to the parks first thing in the morning, grabbing dinner at CityWalk or spending the day at Volcano Bay, complimentary resort transportation is there to get you where you need to go.

💡 My Tip: If you’re staying at a resort that offers more than one transportation option, don’t automatically assume the bus is your best choice. Check the walking and water taxi options, too. Sometimes the fastest option isn’t necessarily the one you’d expect—and sometimes the most enjoyable option is worth an extra few minutes.

Ride Share and Taxi Services

For guests who prefer the flexibility of private transportation, Universal Orlando Resort offers easy access to ride-share services and taxis. Whether you’re heading to the airport, ride-share and taxi services offer convenience. They are also a great option when exploring nearby attractions. These services provide a convenient alternative to traditional transportation options.

Accessibility & Transportation

Getting around Universal Orlando should be an option for everyone. Universal Orlando provides accessible transportation options for guests with disabilities and other functional needs, including accessible buses and water taxis. Transportation staff are available to assist guests with boarding and navigating the resort, helping make it easier to move between the hotels, parks and CityWalk.

If accessibility is an important consideration for your trip, I recommend reviewing Universal’s accessibility information before you arrive. Universal’s Rider’s Guide for Guests with Cognitive Disabilities and other accessibility resources provide helpful information about attractions, transportation and services throughout the resort.

And remember, you don’t have to choose just one way to get around. One of the things I love about Universal Orlando’s transportation system is the flexibility. Take a water taxi when you want a relaxing ride, hop on a bus when that’s the most convenient option, or walk when your resort is close enough. Having multiple options makes navigating a large resort much less intimidating—and lets you choose what works best for you and your travel party.

My Final Transportation Tips

Universal Orlando is a big resort, but getting around doesn’t have to be complicated. Before your trip, take a few minutes to understand which transportation options are available from your hotel. You may discover that walking, a water taxi or a bus is the easiest—and sometimes the most enjoyable—way to get where you’re going.

My biggest advice? Don’t be afraid to try the different options. The water taxi may become one of your favorite parts of staying onsite, a walk may save you time, and the buses will get you where you need to go when neither of those options works. That’s the beauty of Universal’s transportation system: you have choices.

And if you’re staying onsite, take advantage of them. Leave the car parked, skip the Orlando traffic, and let Universal do the driving while you concentrate on enjoying your vacation.
