Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies are relatable, humorous, heartwarming and they have arguably the best soundtrack released in recent years! Now, the new Disney attraction, Guardians of The Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, adds to that “good” feeling.
Disney’s Guardians of The Galaxy Cosmic Rewind opened on May 27, 2022. This much anticipated attraction is a first for the theme park of Epcot and Disney World as a whole. It is not only the first Omni coaster (Omni meaning rotating ride vehicle), but it is the largest enclosed coaster inside a Disney theme park.
In addition, it is the first time Disney has created a reverse launch on a roller coaster. It sounds to me to be like if Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, and Mickey’s Runaway Railway had a baby.
All of that “New” and “first” status would be enough to draw in the crowds. It isn’t just that your vehicle will rotate 360 degrees while riding. It isn’t only that you will be launched backwards at high speeds from the get-go. To me, it has more to do with the theme. Here are 4 reasons why.

Relatable
The characters of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films are a group of individuals with flaws. They are rough around the edges. They’re imperfect, self-serving at times, they argue, and they curse. They are most of us, if not all of us.
None of them are a genetically perfect war hero, a genius millionaire, or a God (well, Peter is half-God but doesn’t know it most of the time). There is a lot of relatabilities in the way their own egos get in the way of their missions and often disrupt their plans. It’s easy to see ourselves in Star Lord’s vulnerability, in Rocket’s ambition, in Drax’s regret, in Gamora’s guarded emotions and Groot’s compassion.
Disney’s Guardians of The Galaxy Cosmic Rewind features Xandar, the home planet of the intergalactic law enforcement. It’s become the first interplanetary pavilion at Epcot. The pavilion is a place for the people of Earth to learn about Xandar. Visitors are exposed to the similarities and differences between our two planets in the queue. We are introduced to the guardians and watch an interview with Peter Quill. In the interview, Peter expresses his excitement because he is familiar with Epcot as he is originally from Earth. He had been there before as a boy.
Then you board the ride and of course, the sh.. hits the fan. But your invested right? You want to help and be a part of the chaos that is the guardian’s world. The music helps!
Disney’s Guardians of The Galaxy Cosmic Rewind Music
The soundtrack to the Guardians of The Galaxy films is timeless. It is expertly executed. In my opinion, it is a character in and of itself. Peter Quill tragically lost his mom at a young age just moments before being abducted by Yondu and the Ravagers. All he has left is a Walkman and a mix tape his mother left for him. Music touches the soul in all the generations, but much like Peter, as a kid in the 80’s, there was no other way to express your feelings more intimately than creating a mix tape. Peter clings to his mom’s music for her memory, to cope, and to live.
As kids of the late 70’s and 80’s we may not have had the greatest sense of fashion, but we had the BEST music! The Guardians of the Galaxy films helps us Gen X’ers relive those most awesome memories.
This Disney attraction uses the soundtrack of the films to tie us to the moments that touch our souls in the same way. What’s best, is you never know what song you’ll get as they will randomly play from list of 6 popular favorites during each ride.
Humor
It is hard not to laugh at ourselves. In fact, it’s important that we do. We see ourselves in this group of misfits and unlikely heroes. That is why we laugh a little harder. As suggested, they are unapologetically irreverent. The quick wit and sarcastic quips of the characters would lead me to argue that the movies are comedies that “stumbled” into the superhero genre. The commentary between Rocket and Peter rivals that of most sibling/friend relationships. Furthermore, Drax and Mantis add levity with their inability to comprehend socially acceptable communication.
With that in mind, the attraction at Epcot, Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind, is fun! Forgoing the idea that you are attempting to assist in saving the galaxy, the fun factor isn’t lost. The use of screen technology throughout the ride, along with the omni mover style vehicle assures the rider that you won’t miss a moment of the chaos and visual humor.
Disney’s Guardians of The Galaxy Cosmic Rewind is Heartwarming
The preface of the Guardians movies is that despite their differences and individually dysfunctional nature, they come together as a family to ultimately do the right thing and make a difference. They find each other as well as themselves. Sharing an unbreakable bond is the result (even though at times they don’t want to admit it).
For their part, Disney invites and promotes Cosmic Rewind as a family attraction. You can board with whomever you share your life with and enjoy the experience. The memories of which I image will be relived over time when you think about riding this roller coaster. Who better to share those moments with than the people you care the most about?
