Magic Kingdom is preparing for a major transformation! Yet, with it comes the emotional farewell of three iconic experiences. Unfortunately, on July 7, Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Belle Riverboat, and the Rivers of America will permanently close. Ultimately, this will make way for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history.
While this news is exciting for what’s ahead, it’s also a moment for reflection on the classic charm these areas brought to the park.
A Tribute to the Past
For decades, guests have found quiet moments and unexpected adventures in this corner of the park. The Liberty Belle Riverboat, with its gentle pace and familiar horn echoing through Liberty Square, offered a nostalgic connection to a slower time.

Families have wandered the spooky caves and wooden bridges of Tom Sawyer Island. They could find mystery in discovering secret paths and playful hideaways. The natural beauty of the Rivers of America created a peaceful backdrop to the excitement of Frontierland.
Certainly, this area was never about the thrill! It was about atmosphere, imagination, and the freedom to explore.
The Future of Frontierland: Piston Peak National Park
The closure of these attractions paves the way for something entirely new. Disney has announced the upcoming expansion of Frontierland into Piston Peak National Park. The space will be inspired by the Pixar Cars universe.

This new land will showcase snowcapped mountain peaks, wilderness trails, cascading waterfalls, and rustic lodges.
The design of the area will reflect “Parkitecture”—a building style inspired by the natural materials and architectural design used in real U.S. National Parks. This will help the land blend beautifully with the existing environments of Liberty Square and Frontierland while creating a distinct visual identity.
A Seamless Connection Across Lands
This new space is thoughtfully designed to connect Liberty Square, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Big Thunder Mountain, and the Piston Peak area. As always, Imagineers will use both story and landscape. Natural barriers and scenic vistas will create structure and flow.

Finally, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will eventually become part of this expanded land. Most importantly, it will further offer continuity and immersion across the western side of Magic Kingdom.
A New Kind of Adventure
One of the highlights of the new land will be a major new attraction themed around an off-road rally experience. Inspired by the Cars IP, it will be styled after real-life park racing events held in rugged national park settings. This promises to bring action, energy, and new storytelling to the park in a completely fresh way.

Guests will be invited to explore the wilderness, discover scenic viewpoints, and engage with new themed experiences. This is all rooted in the adventurous spirit of America’s national parks.
